We all know that coffee machines require regular maintainance to be at their best. Worse still is the situation when your faithful coffee machine gives up on you and you are suddenly caffeine deprived! We are GoCoffee get more enquires regarding coffee machines that, have broken down or are not working well, that are due to the lack descaling than another other problem. Indeed, the importance of regular and correct descaling cannot be understated. So often we here the same sorry tale - 'My coffee machine began flowing more and more slowly and now it's stopped!'. Most of us in the UK are subjected to hard water, meaning there is a lot of dissolved lime and minerals in it. When water is heated the lime and minerals precipitate out and encrust anything they come into contact with. Just have a look inside your kettle to see. It's the same for your coffee machine. Of course the best answer to the problem is only use filtered water in your coffee maker. However, that's not always possible. For those that do not have access to filtered water then the answer is a regular descaling or decalcifying schedule. I recommend at least once a month and maybe once a fortnight if your coffee machine is heavily used. Most of the manufacturers offer descaling products such as Gaggia descaler which is in liquid form, Francis Francis descaler which is in powder form and some is even in tablet form. The problem with the manufactures descaler products is that they are usually carry a price premium. In my opinion the best descaler product is Puly Baby Descaler it also happens to be the cheapest. Puly is a specialist manufacturer of coffee machine cleaning products. Puly Baby Descaler is a generic product suitable for all types of coffee machines. To use Puly Baby descaler simply dissolve the contents of a sachet into 1 - 1.5L of water and pour it into your coffee machine's water tank. Each coffee machine is slightly different and many have programmed descaling cycles. However, the basic technique is the same for all; pass the disolved descaler through your coffee machine via the steam outlet slowly and pausing around every 10 seconds for about 10 seconds until the tank is empty, refill the tank with clean fresh water and do the same again. That's it! simple. A few minutes every month will keep your coffee tasting better and preserve the life of your much loved coffee machine. Article by www.GoCoffee.co.uk
